Let's Be Honest, You Need a Graphic Designer

Let's be honest, you're not a designer. But you are a business owner - the kind of person who is dedicated, determined, and self-sufficient. Because of this, you might be tempted to learn how to use Canva and make all of your own content. A decision that will most likely sound great at the time, but probably won't benefit your business as much as you'd like. Here’s why:

Time is one of the most important factors to consider when deciding to design your own content. First, consider the amount of time it's going to take you to learn how to use Canva (or any other design software) well enough to produce usable content. That doesn't account for the time it will take you to actually design content. Conservatively speaking, that's at least 10 hours dedicated to learning the software, followed by at least an hour spent designing per image. Moreover, due to inexperience, it is likely that anything you design will take significantly longer for you to do than it would a professional.

Consider the amount of time it will take you to learn to design; now consider all the things you could be doing in that time. If you do the math, your productivity will decrease significantly. In these tough times, should you really be spending your valuable time designing on Canva? Every minute you spend on Canva is a minute not spent running a business.

Designing your own content is more expensive than you think. It's a matter of opportunity costs. Think of it like this. When you're designing, you're going to be less productive with your time, as opposed to if you were working on something you are more experienced in. Because of this, money is being lost on two different avenues. You'll be losing money on the time you spend designing since inexperience will slow the entire process. On the other end, you'll lose money on the other things you could be doing that have to be held off as you design. Unrelated tasks will be delayed and suffer, as well.

Quality may be the most important thing to consider. There is a chance that no matter how great your design is, you'll never be happy with it. This is because you're too close to your business. When it comes to design, you often need an outside perspective to see the design separate from the work you put into it. You're going to want the best for business, so you'll always be able to find something wrong with the design if you do it yourself. Even worse, even if you do like your design, you risk creating content for yourself and not your target audience. You are not necessarily your target audience, so what works for you may not work for them.

In short, designing your own content may sound like a good idea, but there are many factors you should consider before deciding to do so.
